2013 Major Championships – Rounds 3 & 4

Players were greeted with blustery conditions on Saturday for Round 3 of the Major Championships. However these conditions didn’t seem to phase Colin Eggins as he took out the dinner for two at the Black Sheep Irish Pub with an outstanding score of 61 nett. Russel Lieschke (65), Lachlan Bill (66), Garth Stacey (66), Bill McMahon (67), Roy McNair (67), Mick Gray (68) and Eddie Hawkins (69) were all recipients in Saturday’s ball rundown. Although moving day saw many great rounds carded the highlight of the day was the hole in one by Gary Spence on the Goulburn Produce sponsored 5th hole. Congratulations Spency! With a third round nett score of 65, Russell Lieschke was the day’s winner in the A Grade competition while Bill McMahon kept up his good run of form by carding a nett 67 to win Saturday’s B Grade competition. The winner of C Grade went to rocketing Roy McNair with a solid round of 66. Nearest the pin on the Goulburn Soldiers Club sponsored 14th was won by Col Eggins while Gary Spence’s hole in one saw him take out the nearest the pin contest on the 5th. The drive and pitch contest on the Goulburn Workers Club sponsored 16th hole was taken out by Scott Nolan.

Unlike Saturday, players were greeted with almost perfect playing conditions for the final round of the men’s Major Championships. The winner of October’s Monthly Medal and the overall winner for the days play was Russel Schmitt with a nett score of 63. Lachlan Bill came out the victor of Sundays A Grade competition with a nett score of 64. Sunday’s B Grade winner was Gary Spence who carded a nett 68 while Roy McNair (67) edged out Eddie Hawkins in a countback to take out Sunday’s prize for C Grade. Nearest the pin, on the Tully Park Tavern 7th hole, went to Russell Schmitt while nearest the pin on the Goulburn Workers Club sponsored 8th went to Lachlan Bill. Scott Nolan was again the winner of the drive and pitch on the Gordon Hotel sponsored 11th. Lachlan Bill (64), Roy McNair (67), Eddie Hawkins (67), Garth Stacey (67), John Smith (68), Gary Spence (68), and Kerry Bensley (69) were all recipients in Sunday’s ball run down.

News and Upcoming Events

All of Tully Park Golf Club is wishing our club professional, Craig Langby, the best of luck (and a dash of skill) as he competes in a 3 day Senior PGA competition in China. Tully Park Members raised $500 to help him on his way. Craig has been planning the trip for some time, and has been practicing regularly. Sweet and sour, black bean, rice wine and pandas have been the focus for several months. Preparation is all important.

A reminder that the Tully Park Golf Club Major Championships start this Saturday, the first of the four rounds, ending Sunday Octrober 27th.

Tully Park Golf Club takes on Railway Social Golf Club at Goulburn Golf Club on Tuesday October 29th, 8.30am for a 9am shotgun start. Cost $10.

The annual Tully Park Golf Club Prostate Cancer Charity Day is scheduled for Saturday November 9th. All welcome. Lots of trophies, fun and a great cause.

Sunday: Tully Park vs Goulburn Workers Club

The Goulburn Workers Club Social Golf Club visited Tully Park Golf Club to compete for the annual Ron Power Memorial Trophy in a 4 Ball Best Ball competition on Sunday. An excellent turnout provided some excellent scores for both Tully Park and the Workers in difficult and windy conditions. T Riley and E Anning were the standouts for the Workers Club, along with Brian Mills and Bill McMahon fron Tully Park, with both pairs carding 45 points. M Gray & R McNair (44 points), G Cave & A Tahana (43), R Lieschke & E Hawkins (43), K Hogan & R Grant (43), K Hogan & R Grant (43), T Heath & A Tahans (42), C McDonald & G Hosking (42), B Larkin & B Webb (39) and G Privett & R Grant (39) were the best of the rest. John Smith was nearest to the pin on the 5th hole, while Trent Cooper was closest on the 13th.

Final Result: Goulburn Workers Club (average 41.5 points) defeated Tully Park (average 41.33 points). This is the Workers Clubs first win in the interclub competition. Next years match will be keenly contested.

The Black Sheep Irish Pub Saturday Competition

Juniors fared a little better in Saturdays Black Sheep Irish Pub Competition at Tully Park Golf Club, in which Trent Cooper carded an excellent 39 points. Trent edged out Rockin Ronny Nunn with 38 points followed by Col Eggins (36 points) and Lachlan Bill (36 points). Trent has shown excellent form of late, particularly in the Saturday competitions. It appears that he appreciates a great feed and doesn’t mind shouting Dad a feed once in a while. If all kids were as nice to their parents, the world would be a much better place.

Goulburn Soldiers Club Midweek Comp

Experience was obviously an asset  in this weeks Goulburn Soldiers Club Midweek Competition at Tully Park Golf Club as the seniors scooped the pool. Not a long driving, backspinning, devil may care junior (or even junior senior such as your scribe) golfer in sight.

Eddie Hawkins led the charge with 27 points, collecting the Goulburn Soldiers Club vouchers and edging out Ted Bayliss on a countback. John Peterson was close behind with 26 points, followed by The Godfather (Don Grimston) on 24 points. Brian Larkin (23), Tony Clewett (23) John Peterson (23) and Don Grimston (22 – 3 card countback).

We believe that the average age of the ball rundown is well over 70. The message is: Keep practicing and the results will come.

Sunday Par

Young Trent Cooper has done it once too often in recent weeks at Tully Park Golf Club. Having won almost as many competitions as our Godfather of Golf, Don Grimston, Trent has caught the eye of the Tully Park Handicapper with is latest effort in Sundays Pare event. Trent carded +9 to claim the trophy, 4 points ahead of Gary Spence on +5.  Josh Cooper was next with +2, followed by the complete athlete, captain Scott Nolan, Shane Cooper and Eddie Hawkins on +1. At the other end of the scale, Rampaging Roy McNair scored -9 to collect a special ball. The Godfather of Golf maintained his awesome streak of trophies, winning the $20 voucher to Kevs Meats or Farmer Felds, while Adam Boxsell won the drive and pitch on the 16th and Greg Hosking took out the nearest to the pin on the 7th.

Next weeks comp at Tully Park is a 3 person Irish stableford event. Phone the pro shop or organise your own team. Keep the October long weekend available as the Tully Park Lilac Time Open is scheduled for Sunday October 6th, along with a 2 person ambrose on Saturday the 5th. A Prawn Chicken and Trivia night is also being organised by the entertainment subcommittee for the Saturday night. Tables of 8, don’t book late!

Coops Scoops Dinner for Two

A stableford competition was played on Saturday at Tully Park Golf Club, with competitors playing for the valued Dinner For Two at the Black Sheep Irish  Pub. As usual, competition was fierce, and the margins skinny. In the end Anthony Cooper won out with 40 points, edging out Steve Langby who carded 39 points. Next was last weeks winner, Trent Cooper with 38 points followed by Col Eggins (37) and Shane Cooper and Reg Gooch (36). The Saturday comps, sponsored by the Black Sheep Irish Pub, have been growing in popularity week by week. With warmer weather upon us,   Dinner for Two could be the best game in town.

Goulburn Soldiers Club Midweek Competition

This weeks Goulburn Soldiers Club Midweek Competition at Tully Park Golf Club provided a mixed bag of results. On the one hand, Don Grimston had his worst round in a month or more, while Kevin “Splinter” Peterson had his best round in over a year. Splinter was showing off in front of a bunch of lady golfers as he cruised to a 7 point victory  carding 32 points for his 12 hole round. That has to come close to shooting under his age. The aforementioned ladies were left in Kevins wake, with Judy Moran and Joy Leary (25 points) and Di Schmitt and Rose Booth (22 points) fighting for the ball rundown. Of course, Don Grimston can always sniff out a prize. He edged out Helen Carne for the special ball with a special 11 points.

Sunday Stableford for Fathers Day

Don is at it again. The rumour spread around Tully Park Golf Club in just a few minutes. Having won last weeks Monthly Medal and Midweek Comp, Don Grimston was again tearing up the course. Dons 38 points was (only just) too good for the rest of the field and it was only his playing partners who were providing any opposition. In the same group as Don, Ken Wray and Darrell Spence also scored 38 points, but were relegated to second and third by the Golf Australia countback system. Charlie McDonald was next with 37 points along with Ben Elliott (37), while Scott Nolan beat Roy McNair for the last ball in a countback. It was particularly pleasing to see a couple of family groups on the course, with the Gegg Family providing a four and the Elliotts a three.

Ken Wray won the Progressive Competition with 61 points, while Scott Nolan and Roy McNair won the nearest to the pins on the 13th and 5th holes. Next weeks competition is a Par event with a trophy donated by Ray Turner.
Golfers are reminded of the upcoming Lilac Time Festival of Golf, including a Two Person Ambrose followed by a Trivia/Prawn/Chicken Night on Saturday October 5th, and the Tully Park Lilac Time Open on Sunday October 6th. Enquire at the clubhouse (02 4822 2828) for details and entry forms.

Fathers Day at the Black Sheep Irish Pub

Junior golfers take note. This could be the best Fathers Day present (and at a stretch, Mothers Day) possible. “Dad, I’m shouting you dinner at the Black Sheep Irish Pub”. Young Trent Cooper did exactly that, winning the Saturday Competition and claiming the Dinner For Two Voucher to the famous eatery. Trents 65 nett was too good for a gutted Adam Boxsell, who had presumed that his 66 would get him across the line. Bad luck Box!. Brian Norris (67), Norm Aubrey (68), and Russell Schmitt (71) were hopefull of dinner, but fell short of the mark. Steve Langby and Josh Cooper (72) rounded out the ball rundown. Trents dad, Shane, scored nett 80 which earned him last place. His “other talents” earned him Dinner For Two at the Black Sheep Irish Pub. Happy Fathers Day Shane!

Goulburn Soldiers Club Midweek Comp

Don Grimston continued his run of good form this week as he claimed the vouchers in the Goulburn Soldiers Club Midweek Competition at Tully Park Golf Club. Having won last Sundays Monthly Medal, Dons score of 29 points was too good for the field in the 12 hole comp. Don narrowly defeated Russell Schmitt who  alos had a great round of 28 points. Having played a second round during the week, Don also claimed third place with 27 points. Joy Leary (26 points), Di Schmitt (25) and Eddie Hawkins (25) rounded out the ball rundown. Paul Hunter scored 12 points and emphatically claimed the special ball.

Saturday Comp – The Black Sheep Irish Pub

The Saturday competition at Tully Park Golf Club was a tight affair this week. Sponsored by the Black Sheep Irish Pub, seniors and juniors fought to the final putt to claim dinner for two at the popular eat and drinkery. Eventually Josh Cooper was the victor with an excellent 39 points followed by Brian Norris (38), Trent Cooper (37) and Col Eggins (36). Russell Schmitt earned himself a special ball with a solid 27 points.

Don Grimston was the winner of the August Monthly Medal competition last Sunday at Tully Park Golf Club. Dons 87 (nett 66) earned him the coveted MM pin as well as entry into Januarys Gold Medal Playoff. Don edged out Brian Mills and Ray Turner (nett 66) and Adam Boxsell (nett 69). Close behind were Rampaging Roy McNair, Trent Cooper and Gary Barnsly, visiting from Mount Broughton, all on nett 70. Grade winners were Scott Nolan (A Grade, nett 71), Ray Turner (B Grade, nett 67) and Don Grimston (C Grade, nett 66). Adam Boxsell won the progressive competition with nett 58 while Ray Turner and Ken Wray won the nearest to the pins on the 8th and 12th holes.

Monthly Medal at Tully Park

Trent Cooper continued his great form as he took out the July Monthly Medal and Stroke competition. Despite an 8 on the 1st hole and a couple of other cranky moments, Trents score of 66 nett edged out Brian Norris in a countback. Gary Spence and The Complete Athlete were next with scores of 68, followed by Tonk Turner (69) and Josh Cooper (70). Scott Nolan, Brian Norris and Trent Cooper won A, B and C Grades repectively. Marty Weise had one for the eclectics as he won the Drive and Pitch on the 16th hole, while Trent Cooper was closest on the 13th hole. Darrell Spence won the progressive competition with 57 nett.

Upcoming events include: August 4 – Stableford, August 10&11 – Foursomes Championships, August 18 – Ambrose, August 25 – Stroke/Monthly Medal, as well our regular Midweek and Saturday Competitions. The AGM is scheduled for 1pm on Sunday August 25th.

A reminder that membership fees are now overdue. Non financial members will not be eligible for competitions from August 1st.

Saturday Stableford

The Black Sheep Irish Pub Saturday competition at Tully Park Golf Club is gaining momentum, with more and more players vying for the Dinner for Two trophy. Brian Norris was this weeks winner with an excellent 37 points and is looking forward to the best fish and chips outside of Ireland. Trent Cooper also played well scoring 34 points while Anthony Cooper (31), Col Eggins (31) ans S. Gooch (29) rounded out the ball rundown. Greg Hosking was the recipient of the special ball.

Don’t forget – Tee times from 7am to 12 noon. Book your tee time with our tame golf professional, Craig, on 4822 2828.

Goulburn Soldiers Club Midweek Competition

Russell Schmitt was the standout in last weeks Goulburn Soldiers Club Midweek competition at Tully Park Golf Club. Russells score of 26 points for his 12 hole round was all the more impressive for the heavy and cold conditions that prevailed. John Peterson and Don Grimston were 2 points astern with 24 points each, while Eddie Hawkins may have forgotten some of his equations as he came home with 23 points. Kevin Peterson won the special ball with 14 points.

Next weeks competition is the Tully Park Monthly Medal and Stroke competition, with a trophy donated by John and Anne Pigott. Don’t forget the foursomes championships are looming large, to be played on August 10th and 11th. The Tully Park AGM is also coming soon – August 25th at 1pm with a sausage sizzle linch.

Sunday Stableford – Brrrrr

It wasn’t just cold at Tully Park last Sunday. It was as cold as mother-in-laws breath. Colder than Trimbole’s toes. Cold. Gary Spence had his customised mittens in place. His long putter allowed one hand to stay warm under his chin (the other in his pocket), while his short putting stroke minimised exposure on an all round unpleasant day. Garys 37 points was 2 points clear of Phil Elliott (35) and Scott Nolan (34 points) and won him the $5o voucher to spend at the Tully Park Pro Shop. Russell Schmitt (33), Tommy Heath (32) and Chris Elliott (32) were close behind.

The progressive competition fell to Scott Nolan, who collected a Kev’s Meats voucher. Scott also won the Drive and Pitch on the 9th hole, while Gary Spence was nearest to the pin on the 11th green.

The Black Sheep Irish Pub Saturday Comp

Juniors were the only players silly enough to brave the inclement weather to compete in the Saturday competition at Tully Park, sponsored by The Black Sheep Irish Pub. Mick Hosking was the eventual (and chilled) winner with a score of nett 73 in very difficult conditions. Mick outscored Trent Cooper, Nikita Hosking and Jonno Gegg to claim the dinner for two voucher.

Monthly Medal Sunday

Tommy Heath and Gary Spence were the only players able to beat their handicaps in Sundays stroke competition and Monthly Medal at Tully Park Golf Club. Tommy prevailed with an excellent sore of nett 63 to claim a generous trophy donated by Scott Nolan, while Gaz also scored well with nett 66. Don Grimston (67), Brian Mills (69) and Scott Nolan (72) were also in the running, while Russell Lieschke (nett 90) was not. Having won the Midweek Comp earlier in the week, Russell was not pleased with his turn of form. Tommy won A Grade, while Gary won B Grade and Brian C Grade. The progressive competition was won by Eddie Hawkins with nett 47, while Charlie McDonald won both nearest to the pins on the 5th and 13th holes.

This round has also injected some interest into the Kevin Allen Memorial Consistency Competition. Tommy Heath now leads with 7 rounds at an average of 32.6, followed by Eddie Hawkins 7 @ 32.3, and Brian Mills 7 @ 31.7. A number of players however, have excellent averages with less rounds: John Smith @ 35.8, Andrew kadwell @ 35.0 and Roy McNair @ 33.4. The Kevin Allen Memorial Consistency consists of 12 rounds through the year at Tully Park, the best 8 round of which will count to the players ultimate score. Traditionally a couple of 40 point rounds will set the cat amongst the pidgeons, and this years comp it seems, will be no different.
Next Sundays competition at Tully Park is a single stableford with a trophy donated by the Hosking Family. Both the Saturday and Sunday competitions now have tee times between 7am and 12 noon, with booking sheets in the Tully Park Pro Shop. A number of players have been taking advantage of a later tee time and having a Sunday sleep in as well. Ring Craig on 4822 2828 to book a tee time.

Don’t forget that Tully Park 2013/14 memberships are now due and are still the best value golf membership around. Members fees are only $220 this year or $150 if you are a pensioner (with a $5 discount if you are a member of the Goulburn Soldiers Club). Juniors (11-18 years old) and Sub Juniors (10 years and under) are only $85 and $30, respectively. Members can gain an official Golf Australia handicap and can play all day every day for free.

Baa Baa Reg Gooch

People are beginning to talk. Rumour and innuendo abound. Much like the Hosking familys well known affection for chickens, some say that Reg Gooch has developed a fondness for sheep. Particulary Black Sheep. And Irish Pubs. Reg backed up his win in the innaugural Black Sheep Irish Pub Saturday competition with another impressive win this week at Tully Park Golf Club. Reg takes home the voucher for dinner for two at the aforementioned Irish Pub. Reg’s score of 38 points was too good for Mick Hosking (36), Marty Hunter (35), and Greg Hosking (33) and Scott Nolan (33). The committee is considering asking Reg to play in gumboots if he wins again in the near future.

Goulburn Soldiers Club Midweek Competition

Russell Lieschke was 2 shots clear of the field in last weeks Goulburn Soldiers Club Midweek Competition at Tully Park Golf Club. Russell carded an excellent 25 points for his 12 hole round, edging out John Peterson, Don Grimston and Russell Schmitt on 23 points. Eddie Hawkins and Kerry Bensley rounded out the ball rundown with 21 and 20 points respectively, Kerry winning his ball in a 5 card countback.helen Carne won the special ball with 4 points.

Sunday American Foursomes – Sorry

Sorry. Sorry. Sorry. No, I’m Sorry. That’s OK, I’m Sorry too. Sorry.

Ah yes the sorrowful call of the foursomes golfer. Its good to play foursomes with a mate, who knows that you really don’t mean to ruin his day on the course, and who generally doesn’t mean to ruin yours. Brian Mills and Bill McMahon worked all that out years ago, and this week combined beautifully to easily win the American Foursomes competition at Tully Park this week. With a nett score of 60.75, Billsy and Millsy were 5 shots clear of the next pair, Ken Wray and Don Grimston on 65 (another pairing with sorry experience in foursomes). Popeye Tozer and Craig Langby were next with 63 .375, followed by Charlie McDonald and Greg Hosking on 71. Brian Mills also won the nearest to the pin on the 14th hole, while Charlie McDonald claimed nearest on the 15th. Russell Lieschke won the weekly raffle. Sorry.

Next Sunday at Tully Park is the Monthly Meday and Stroke Competition, with the trophy donated by Scott Nolan. Tee times are from 7am to 12 noon – book in with Craig in the pro shop on 4822 2828. The Tully Park Annual General Meeting has been moved to August 25th.

How does that compare with a season of cricket, soccer, or footy?

Sunday 3 Person Ambrose

A great roll up on Sunday at Tully Park Golf Club, in spite of the bitterly cold weather and the slight threat of rain, saw some excellent scores posted in an ambrose competition. This week, the junior golfers were encouraged to play in the senior comp and were paired with the senior golfers. Stewart and Tracker Tahana had provided some excellent meat trays as trophies along with generous vouchers from Russ and Di Schmitt for the best juniors. The winning group won their own trophy, being Tracker and Stewart Tahana, Tim James and James Dyring with a nett 51.5 defeating Lachlan Bill, Craig Langby, Charlie McDonald and Alan Bill with nett 52. next on 56.66 were J & A Cooper and Brian Norris. Junior winners were james Dyring, Lachlan Bill and Trent Cooper, while Rhianna Webb, Jai Field, Jonno Gegg and Alan Gegg were also rewarded for their efforts, receiving a ball each. Last place went to Greg and Michael Hosking who were lucky to have Rhianna Webb playing with them. Everyone knows that the Hoskings will do just about anything to win a ball. Nearest to the pins went to Brian Norris on the 8th and Tom Heath on the 14th, while the longest drive went to Ben Hogan (who gave the club president a good earbashing on the 16th – from 180m with a 3 wood).

Next week sees the start of Tully Park Golf Clubs Saturday competition, with tee times from 7am to 12noon. Please use the Tee Time Booking Sheet in the pro shop, or ring Craig on 4822 2828 to book in. The comp is open to all golfers with an official handicap, $10 for Tully Park members and $18 for non members.
Next Sundays competition at Tully Park is the Monthly Medal stroke competition with a trophy donated by Scott Nolan. Again, tee times are from 7am to 12pm – call the Tully Park pro shop or drop in to book a tee time.

Goulburn Soldiers Club Midweek Competition

This weeks Goulburn Soldiers Club Midweek Competition at Tully Park Golf Club was a very close match with three players a shot behind the winner, Chris Schremmer, who scored 32 points. The three, on 22 points were Ted Bayliss, Don Grimston and Russell Schmitt, while Paul Hunter was next with 21 points. Herlen Carne won the special ball with 4 points.

Sunday Stableford

This weeks Sunday competition at Tully Park Golf Club came down to a battle between a veteran and a youngster, one with a swing that you can’t teach and the other with a bunch of talent. In the end, age and the unorthodox swing, in the form of Kerry Bensley defeated Trent Cooper in a countback on 35 points. Greg Hosking and Tom Heath were close behind on 34 points followed by Roger Gann, Glenn Gooch, Lachlan Bill, Ray Turner and Mick Gray on 33 points. Apologies for the lack of a golf report last week but the local rag did not consider it worth publishing. Nearest to the Pins went to Scott Nolan on the 12th hole and Mick Gray on the 7th. Brian Mills won the progressive competition with 35 points. Meanwhile Trent and Shane Cooper won their third straight Cock O’ the Walk to claim the treasured COW pin, defeating Greg and Mick Hosking.

This weeks comp was also the 6th round of the Kevin Allen Consistency Competition. At the half way point 6 players are within 3 shots of the lead. Eddie Hawkins holds top spot with 190 points, followed by Brian Mills (189), Tom Heath, Charlie McDonald, Neil Tozer (188), and Mick Gray (187).

Next Sundays Tully Park Golf Club competition is a 3 person ambrose, with a 7.30 for 8am tee time. A barbeque breakfast will also be on offer.

Goulburn High student Trent Cooper was this weeks winner in the Sunday Competition at Tully Park Golf Club. Trent beat the field by 6 shots with an outstanding nett 63 to claim the generous trophy bdonated by John Smith. Darrell Spence and Eddie Hawkins were next with nett 69s, followed by Charlie McDonald (70), Russell Schmitt (71) and Jonno Gegg (72). Roiyce Dockett was not in the best form as he cruised to a nett 26 over par (93). Nearest to the pins went to Ken Wray on the 5th hole and Eddie Sivell on the 14th hole, while Shane and Trent Cooper defeated Roy McNair and Mick Gray in the Cock O The Walk to record their second win. Shane and Trent must now defeat Greg and Michael Hosking (good luck with that!) to earn the covetted Cock O The Walk badge. The progressive competition winner was Charlie McDonald with nett 54.

Next weeks competition is a single stableford competition with a trophy donated by Goulburn Water Systems. From next Sunday tee times will be extended from 7am to 12 noon. A time booking sheet is located in the Pro Shop which players are encouraged to use.

Goulburn Soldiers Club Midweek Competition

Stewart Tahana took advantage of a generous boss and an earlymark from TAFE last week to play  in the Goulburn Soldiers Club Midweek  competition at Tully Park. In doing so, Stewart recorded an outstanding round of 31 points for his 12 holes and claimed the vouchers. Don Grimston was next in line with a greaat round of 28 points, followed by Phil Elliott (26) aqnd Paul Rowland (25). Nikita Hosking was lucky not to injure herself, such was the quality of her round as she claimed the special ball with 10 points.

Goulburn Soldiers Club Midweek Competition

The Goulburn Soldiers Club Midweek Competition at Tully Park was a shoe in for Marty Hunter last week. With 22 points on the front 9, Marty would have had to try to lose over the closing three holes. And try he did. With scores of 1,1,2, Marty got over the line to record 26 points and secure the win over Stewart Tahana (24 points) and Paul Hunter (23 points in a countback). John Peterson won the special ball with 11 points.

Sunday Stableford

The Tully Park Golf Club Sunday competition was played in unpleasant (and wet) conditions. With a limited field braving the elements, the competition was unanimously truncated to a 12 hole comp. Brian Mills was the only player who was disapointed, as he was playing his best round for some time. Millsy came home with 25 points to win the voucher. Stewart Tahana continued his good form with 23 points, followed by Tracker Tahana and Bill McMahon with 22 points. Tom Heath had 20 points while Scott Nolan rounded out the ball rundown with 19 points in a four card countback. Shane Cooper won the special ball in a countback over Popeye Tozer. The clubhouse soon turned into a sauna, as wet clothes and players camped around every available heat source in an attempt to dry out.

Nearest to the pins went to Ron Nunn on the 5th hole, while Scott Nolan was nearest for the drive and pitch on the 12th hole. Next Sundays competition is a Stroke event with a trophy donated by John Smith. The following weeks are a Stableford and Kevin Allen Consistency Competition (June 16th) followed by a three person ambrose on June 23rd.

Congratulations to Roger Gann on gaining his official Golf Australia handicap of 10.2.

Minor Championships 2013

This years Minor Championships were contested over two days, three grades and 36 holes of stroke competition. Round 1 was all about two families, the Bills and the Hoskings. The Bills, father Alan and outstanding junior talent Lachlan both scored their first eagles (2 under par) in the same round and in the same group. On the 5th hole, Alan Bill hit beautifully from the tee to the blind pin. Upon arrival at the pin, he feared that the ball had carried the green and ended up in the river. “It’s probably in the hole” he quipped while he thought “as if”.  Sure enough the holy grail of amateur golf was his. Later on the 13th hole Lachlan swung easily from 90 meters out to a difficult back pin position. The ball rolled up toward the pin, took a “logo moment” and dropped into the cup. Meanwhile over at Hosking Town, father Greg and son Michael were fighting it out for  first round A Grade nett honours. With both carding nett 65, Greg claimed the voucher on seniority (and a countback). At the same time Nikita Hosking was quietly demolishing the B Grade competition, knocking off Tracker Tahana by a shot with nett 66. In C Grade, Jono Gegg was too good for Popeye Tozer, carding 70 nett to win that round. Also in the mix at the halfway point were Paul Rowland (68), Eddie Sivell (68), Charlie McDonald (69), Bill McMahon (69), Russell Schmitt (69) and Lacchlan Bill (70).

Round two and the Monthly Medal dawned cold, overcast and frosty. As cold as charity, in fact. Kerry Bensley had the standout round and claimed the Monthly Medal and C Grade with an excellent 62 nett. Charlie McDonald won A Grade with nett 65, while Bill McMahon won B Grade with nett 71. Also featuring, and challenging for the Championship prizes were Andrew Kadwell (66), Piopeye Tozer (69), Marty Weise (69), Russell Lieschke (69), Alan Bill (70), Tom Heath (71), Ben Hogan (71) Russell Schmitt (72) and Trent Cooper (72). Adam Boxsell was not putting his hat in the ring for a spot on the Championship board. Instead, he carded 82 nett and scored the special ball.

After 36 holes the final results were thus:

A Grade Gross: Scott Nolan (1) – 76+78=154
A Grade Nett: Charlie McDonald (12) 69+65=134

B Grade Gross: Russell Schmitt (15) 84+87=171 (Also Nikita Hosking (17) 83+86=169)
B Grade Nett: Bill Mcmahon (16) 69+71=140 (Also Nikita Hosking (17) 66+69=135)

C Grade Gross: Andrew Kadwell (21) 94+87=181
C Grade Nett: Neil Tozer (23) 72+69=141

Goulburn Soldiers Club Midweek Competition

This weeks Goulburn Soldiers Club Midweek Competition was a tight affair and one for the veterans. Thats right, not a junior, nor even a youthfull golfer in sight. Tony Clewett took the vouchers home with an excellent score of 26 points for his 12 hole round. John Peterson was next with an also impressive 25 points, followed by a crew on 24 points. Margaret Gibson and Bryson Plumb floated to the top of the countback to round out the ball rundown. Helen Carne enjoyed her round immensely and took home the special ball with 10 points.

Junior Golf Champions at Tully Park – Where Else?

Sixty years ago, a young Bruce Devlin, of Tully Park, won the Southern Tablelands Junior Open Championship. Forty eight years ago a young Jack Newton won the Schoolboys Open Championship at Tully Park. Thirty three years ago Brett Ogle won the Tully Park A Grade Championship…

Bruce Devlin
Recently young Lachlan Bill was granted entry into the All Schools Under 15’s Golf Tournament and Jack Newton Shield. Lachy played some great golf, going around the tough Wentworth Falls Country Club course with scores of 78 and 80. In doing so, Lachlan won the Year 8 scratch event and placed 4th overall. Lachlan has consistently been performing well in junior golf competitions and Jack Newton Foundation events. Of course, being from Tully Park, Lachlan will not be troubled by any close attention from local media. Well done Lachlan! All of Tully Park are proud of you.

Trent Cooper wins one for Mum

Trent Cooper played an outstanding round of composed golf on Sunday, carding 46 points for the 18 holes. Trent claimed a fabulous trophy (a Breville Wok and Grill) donated by Brian and Jan Mills. Trents mum will be happy. As soon as he learns how to use it. Greg Hosking was very unlucky to be beaten with 45 points as he too played an outstanding round. Andrew Kadwell was next with 41 points, followed by Mick Gray, Roy McNair and Ray Turner on 40 points. Mick Hosking beat Charlie McDonald for the special ball with 24 points.

In the Progressive competition Ray Turner beat Roy McNair in a countback with 51 points, while Adam Boxsell won the raffle. Neil Tozer was nearest to the pin on the 5th hole while Scott Nolan won the drive and pitch on the 13th. Shane and Trent Cooper won the Cock o’the Walk against Scott Nolan and Charlie McDonald, 5 up and 4 to play.

Next weeks competition is the annual match against the RSL Social Golf Club at Goulburn Golf Club. Cost is $22 for golf and lunch or $16 for lunch only. Tee off is at 6.45am.. The following week sees the Minor Championships to be played over 36 holes on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th of May.

Goulburn Soldiers Club Midweek Competition

Greg Hosking was in sizzling form in last weeks Goulburn Soldiers Club Midweek Competition. Kicking off his round with a double bogie, Greg soon made amends with two birdies and an eagle on his front 9 to record an outstanding 2 over par, 30 points. Left amongst the wreckage were Beryl Gray and Don Grimston (26 points), Kerry Bensley (25) and Garth Stacey and Scott Nolan (22 in a 4 card countback). Anthony Cooper was the recipient of the special ball with an outstanding 11 points.

Tully Park Sureshot GPS Fourball Qualifier

The first round of the NSW Fourball Championship was held on Sunday with many keen pairs vying for the opportunity to proceed through to the District round and a shot at the State Final at Bonville, Coffs Harbour. Only three pairs can proceed to the District round so the competition was hot. The penultimate prize is more than worthwhile, three days at the Bonville Golf resort, all expenses paid. Scott Nolan and Debbi Collins have made it once, and, going back to 2005, Charlie McDonald and Paul Todkill had a similar honour.

The winners of the Sunday comp were Eddie Sivell and Andrew Kadwell who carded an excellent 47 points. Chris Elliott and Ray Turner were close behind with 46 points followed by Trent and Shane Cooper (46) and Scott Nolan and Charlie McDonald (45). The Department of Education (Russell Lieschke and Eddie Hawkins) won the special ball.

Nearest to the pins went to Eddie Sivell (Goulburn Workers Club 8th) and Scott Nolan (Kevs Quality Meats 12th). The Cock o’the Walk was a walkover with Scott Nolan and Charlie McDonald demolishing Marty Hunter and Adam Boxsell.

Next weeks competition is the Mothers Day Single Stableford with a prize donated by Brian and Jan Mills. It will also include the May round of the Kevin Allan Memorial Consistency Competition. Upcoming comps include the Fourball versus the RSL Social Golf Club (May 19th) and the Minor Championships (May 25th and 26th).
